Language and Executive Functioning:

When people think about improving their executive functioning, they often imagine this means getting better at time management, material organization, planning, and problem-solving.

Those skills are critical for personal and professional success – and they are also the “performance” side of executive functioning – what the world “sees on the stage.”

Language is a huge part of what’s going on “behind the scenes” – it is the way we communicate with ourselves about what we have done in the past and where we are going in the future.

Think about an actor preparing for a performance – they can improve their vocal, facial, and physical performance of their lines – what the world “sees on the stage” – but they must also prepare their understanding of and knowledge of their script to deliver a truly masterful performance – and that is all done “behind the scenes.”
